Copper Foil Laser Drilling Machine - TOB-F200W-T3
Product Overview and Ideal Applications
The TOB-F200W-T3 is a roll-to-roll copper foil laser drilling machine built for lithium-ion battery current collector foils. The optical set is triplicated rather than single-head: three 200W fiber lasers, three high-speed high-precision scanning galvanometers and three 100×100mm scanning field lenses, working across a 300×300mm drilling range on a 320×320mm platform. Copper foil up to 300mm wide and up to 10 μm thick is handled on 3-inch unwind and rewind shafts, with automatic winding to a maximum roll diameter of 300mm.
The machine is built around web handling as much as around the laser. The correction system holds the foil position to ±0.2mm with a 1ms response, and the overall correction accuracy is stated as ±0.15mm, which the manufacturer relates to the edge regularity of the raw material. Both unwind and rewind run on servo motors with quick clamping and parameters set on a 4.3-inch touch screen, while the operator station is a Windows 10 PC with a monitor of at least 12.4 inch. Drilling length is set on the touch screen so that the machine stops itself at the end of the length.
Ideal for:
- Roll-to-roll drilling of micro-hole patterns into copper foil for lithium-ion battery current collectors
- Copper foil webs up to 300mm wide and up to 10 μm thick, supplied in rolls up to 300mm in diameter on 3-inch cores
- Processes that need hole diameter and hole pitch both held to ±0.01mm across a 300×300mm working area
- Production runs where the drilled length has to be set, the run stopped automatically at that length, and the foil rewound without manual handling
- Not for: foil wider than 300mm, foil thicker than 10 μm, or rolls above 300mm in diameter — those fall outside the stated material window. It is also a continuous-web machine on 3-inch shafts, so it does not replace punching of discrete blanks.
Where Copper Foil Laser Drilling Fits in Battery Electrode Manufacturing
Laser drilling of the copper foil sits upstream of coating. The foil arrives as a roll, is drilled as a continuous web, and is rewound so that it can be fed into the coater. That is why the machine is laid out as a web line with unwind, correction, drilling and rewind in one frame rather than as a stand-alone marking station:
- The copper foil roll is loaded onto the 3-inch unwind shaft and clamped quickly
- The drilling step takes place here, with the three 200W fiber lasers working through the 300×300mm drilling range above the 320×320mm platform
- Web position is held by the correction system, which has a ±0.2mm correction accuracy and a 1ms response; the overall correction accuracy of ±0.15mm depends on the edge regularity of the incoming foil
- Debris from the drilled holes is collected in the waste collection box and fume is carried away by the extraction system
- The drilled foil is rewound automatically on the 3-inch rewind shaft to a maximum roll diameter of 300mm, and leaves for coating on a line such as a slot die coater electrode coating machine
Key Engineering Characteristics of TOB-F200W-T3
- Three laser channels: 3 × 200W fiber lasers, 3 × high speed high precision scanning galvanometers and 3 × 100×100mm scanning field lenses — the optical set is triplicated, so the configuration is stated per channel rather than as a single head
- Hole accuracy: ±0.01mm on hole diameter and ±0.01mm on hole pitch — these are the two tolerances that decide whether a drilled pattern matches the electrode design
- Web edge correction: ±0.2mm correction accuracy with a 1ms response, and an overall correction accuracy of ±0.15mm which the manufacturer ties to the edge regularity of the raw material — the incoming roll edge quality is therefore part of the process window
- Material window: foil width ≤ 300mm, foil thickness ≤ 10 μm, roll diameter ≤ 300mm, and 3-inch unwind and rewind shaft diameters
- Drilling geometry: a 300×300mm laser drilling range over a 320×320mm platform, with laser energy stated at 200W
- Laser service life: ≥100000 hours, described by the manufacturer as maintenance-free
- Debris and fume handling: a waste collection box for drilling debris, with 99% of the debris removed and no sticking to the material, plus fume and dust extraction — the point being that the drilled foil goes to coating without a cleaning step
- Servo web drive: servo motors on both the unwind and the rewind, with control parameters set on the touch screen interface and quick clamping at both stations
- Operator interface: a 4.3-inch touch screen as the machine HMI, plus a Windows 10 computer with a monitor of at least 12.4 inch as the auxiliary input device; the touch screen home page shows the drilled roll length in mm with a display error of ±2mm
- Status and safety: a three-color status indicator light with audible and visual alarm, manual / auto / pause / emergency stop buttons on the workbench, and an automatic stop with alarm if the laser emits no light continuously during operation
- Electrical compliance: the electrical components used in the circuit comply with CE standards

Selection Guide: Matching TOB-F200W-T3 to Your Foil and Hole Design
Two things decide whether this machine matches a project: the hole design, and the format of the foil roll that is fed into it. Everything below uses only the figures stated by the manufacturer.
Choosing by Hole Design
The manufacturer quotes drilling rates of approximately 0.013/min for 100 μm holes, 0.016/min for 200 μm and 0.085/min for 500 μm, and states that the actual rate depends on the hole design. The rate is therefore a function of the pattern rather than a fixed figure, and the pattern has to be fixed first: the drilling range is 300mm × 300mm on a 320mm × 320mm platform, while hole diameter and hole pitch are both held to ±0.01mm. Note that the manufacturer does not state a time unit for these rates, so the numbers should be taken as comparative between hole sizes and quoted as given rather than converted.
Choosing by Foil Format
| Foil format | Limit on TOB-F200W-T3 | What to check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Foil width | ≤ 300mm | Confirm that the width of the incoming roll, including any trim, stays at or below 300mm |
| Foil thickness | ≤ 10 μm | Confirm the foil specification and its tolerance against the 10 μm limit |
| Roll diameter | ≤ 300mm | The automatic winding stops the finished roll at a maximum diameter of 300mm, so plan the length per roll around that |
| Roll core | 3 inch unwind and rewind shafts | The incoming rolls need a 3-inch core to mount on the unwind shaft |
| Foil edge condition | Overall correction accuracy ± 0.15mm (related to the edge regularity of the raw material) | Because the manufacturer relates the overall correction accuracy to the edge regularity of the raw material, agree the edge condition with the foil supplier as part of the specification |
Practical Operating Recommendations
- Incoming foil edge quality: the overall correction accuracy of ±0.15mm is stated to be related to the edge regularity of the raw material. Treat edge condition as part of the process specification with the foil supplier rather than as a machine setting.
- Parameter groups: machine parameters can be recalled in groups and the group names can be edited and saved. Save one group per hole design so that a changeover does not require re-entering values.
- Drilling length: set the length on the touch screen and let the machine stop itself. The stop is announced by an audible and visual alarm with an on-screen prompt, so it is a normal end-of-length event rather than a fault — make sure operators know the difference before the roll alarm is what they see.
- Full-roll running: in automatic mode the machine stops after a delay when the unwind roll runs out, and the delay time is settable. Set that delay to the amount of trailing foil you want to keep drilled.
- Debris and fume: the waste collection box, the 99% debris removal figure and the fume and dust extraction are what keep the drilled foil clean enough to go straight to coating. Empty the box on a fixed schedule rather than only when the machine complains.
- Laser output check: if the laser emits no light continuously while running, the machine stops and alarms. Treat that alarm as a maintenance trigger, given the laser is specified for ≥100000 hours as maintenance-free.
Engineering FAQ
Q1: My copper foil is 400mm wide. Can this machine still be used?
No. The stated copper foil material width for the TOB-F200W-T3 is ≤ 300mm, and the copper foil roll diameter is also capped at 300mm. A 400mm web falls outside both the machine's stated material window and its drilling range of 300mm × 300mm. Options are to split the web to 300mm or below before drilling, or to have a configuration quoted around the wider format.
Q2: Can it drill 15 μm copper foil?
The stated copper foil material thickness limit is ≤ 10 μm, so 15 μm is above the published window. If the project needs a thicker substrate, raise it with us before ordering rather than assuming the machine will run it.
Q3: Why are two different edge correction figures published, ±0.2mm and ±0.15mm?
They describe two different things. ±0.2mm is the correction accuracy of the edge correction system, which is paired with a response time of 1ms. ±0.15mm is the overall correction accuracy, and the manufacturer states that this figure is related to the edge regularity of the raw material. The overall figure is therefore the one that depends on the foil you feed in, while the system figure describes the correction hardware itself.
Q4: What happens if the roll runs out while the machine is drilling in automatic mode?
The machine stops after a delay when the unwind roll runs out, gives an audible and visual alarm and shows a prompt on the touch screen. The delay time is settable, so the behaviour at end of roll can be matched to the process instead of stopping dead at the last hole.
Q5: Does the drilling debris stay on the foil?
The machine is specified with a waste collection box for the drilling debris, and the manufacturer states that every hole shape is consistent, that 99% of the debris is removed, and that it does not stick to the material. The machine also has fume extraction and dust extraction. The practical implication is that the rewound roll is intended to move to coating without an added cleaning step.
Q6: How do I tell a normal stop from a fault?
The machine has a three-color status indicator light and an audible and visual alarm, and the touch screen carries the corresponding prompt. A normal end-of-length stop and an end-of-roll stop both announce themselves on the screen. If the laser emits no light continuously while the machine is running, the machine stops and alarms — that is a laser condition, not a normal end of run. After a serious fault the machine is shut down and restarted, and the equipment returns to its initial state.
Q7: Is the laser maintenance-free?
The laser life is stated as ≥100000 hours and is described by the manufacturer as maintenance-free. The maintenance items the datasheet does call out are the waste collection box for drilling debris and the fume and dust extraction, both of which need emptying and checking on a schedule.
Q8: What do I need to prepare on site?
The datasheet gives the machine footprint as approximately 500mm × 1000mm × 1600mm and the operating environment as 5-50 °C / 10-90%. The electrical supply requirement is not stated on this page, so confirm it with us before installation. A 3-inch core supply for the incoming rolls and a plan for handling the drilled rolls up to 300mm in diameter are the two material-side items to arrange in advance.
Tell us the foil thickness, the foil width and the hole design, and we will confirm whether the TOB-F200W-T3 configuration fits the pattern you need.
