There have two way the battery cells core assembly : winding or stacking.

Battery winding machine

The battery stacking type is to cut the cathode and anode electrode and the separator to a specified size, and then stack the anode piece, the separator, and the cathode piece into a small cell monomer, and then stack the small cell monomers in parallel to form a composition a large battery cell; the winding type is a process in which the electrode after slitting is fixed on the winding needle and the cathode, the anode and the separator are rolled into the cell as the winding needle rotates.

The operation of the battery winding is relatively simple, and it can be completed quickly whether it is semi-automatic or fully automatic. The battery stacking process is highly complex, manual operation is time-consuming and laborious, and automation is difficult to industrialize due to equipment problems. In addition, in terms of cell quality control, the winding type is easier to control, while the stacking type is more difficult to achieve good consistency due to cumbersome process steps.

Regarding consumer batteries, more attention is paid to the improvement of efficiency than battery capacity and performance, so customers will have demand for winding technology. However, for dynamic lithium batteries, the stacking process can better take advantage of the advantages of large cells, and it has advantages over winding in safety, energy density, and process control. At the same time, the lamination process can better control the cell yield The most important thing is to pursue high energy density, so the stacking process is the best choice in the future.

Both the battery stacking machine and the battery winding machine can prepare large-capacity square batteries. From the perspective of the vehicle development platform, the manufacturing of the square batteries in the future will match the vehicle chassis. If you look at energy density and cruising range alone, large modules and large batteries are indeed the trend, stacking is more dominant than winding, but the essence of market competition is price. If stacking equipment can significantly reduce costs, the profit will be higher than winding, replacement may be close at hand.
