LiPF6 as additive to enhance lithium battery performance
According to the Northwest Pacific National Laboratory studies have shown that to the electrolyte(LiTFSI-LiBOBdual-salt/carbonate-solvent-basedelectrolytes)to add a small amount (0.05M) of LiPF6(lithium hexafluorophosphate), Lithium metal battery charging capacity and cycle stability will be greatly improved.
According to the study, the addition of the additive to the lithium metal battery, the 4V cathode at the appropriate high load (1.75mAhcm-2), 500 times after the cycle of its power capacity retention is 97.1%, when charge and discharge current density reached to 1.75mAhcm-2 , the overpotential growth of the electrode is extremely limited. Researchers believe that fast charging and cycling stability thanks to lithium metal surface (solid electrolyte) is durable, electrically conductive and AI cathode current collector.
The above figure shows that PNNL will add lithium hexafluorophosphate to the double salt / carbonic acid solvent electrolyte. The cycling stability of the lithium metal battery will be improved, the charging speed will be increased, the voltage will be higher and the charging interval will be longer.
PNNL's earlier study was to find a much better electrolyte, which made the battery energy efficient or extremely slow charge, can not be used in high-voltage batteries, or fast charging, but not too Stable, and low battery voltage.
Researchers have tried to add lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6, lithiumhexafluorophosphate), which has been used in lithium-ion batteries, to a fast charge electrolyte to form a new electrolyte, while also using lithium anodes and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide , So a fast, efficient, high-voltage battery was born.
Since this additive has been used in parts of lithium-ion batteries, it is now ready for use and is relatively inexpensive, but its low demand (0.6 wt%).
