According to foreign media reports, Japan announced the invention of a new cathode material can increase battery capacity more than twice. Japanese Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) announced recently that one of their research groups successfully synthesized materials that alternately overlap manganese oxide nanosheets and graphenes. As a cathode electrode material for lithium and sodium ion rechargeable batteries, the composite material can improve the charge-discharge capacity of the battery by more than twice and prolong the service life of the battery, thereby solving the problem of incompatible capacity and lifetime. In theory, the transition metal oxide has high capacity and is expected to become a substitute for carbon material. In particular, manganous oxide having a layered structure is peeled off to form a single-molecule nanosheet, which is used as a cathode electrode. All the surfaces are active and the capacity can be greatly increased. However, the difficulty of manganese oxide is repeated charge and discharge easily destroy the structure, nano-sheet is also easy to aggregate into a clump. The team dispersed manganese oxide nanosheets in solution and mixed them with graphene to synthesize an interactive multilayer composite. Manganese oxide and graphene are negatively charged, usually mutually exclusive. As early as 2015, the team solved the problem of rejection by chemically modifying graphene to positively charge it, and achieved the highest capacity and longest life expectancy of the metal oxide cathode materials. This time by the two substances from the molecular level of composite materials have been difficult to achieve high characteristics. In addition to being used in rechargeable batteries, composite materials can dramatically improve the performance of energy storage and conversion systems such as supercapacitors and electrode catalysts.
